History of English Language Education

The Trust supports explorations into global histories of English language education, and the consolidation and dissemination of historical materials for active use by English language learners, teachers and researchers around the world

What does HELE do?

The HELE initiative aims to promote interest in the histories of teaching and learning English in different parts of the world, including former colonies of English-speaking nations. It supports archiving, cataloguing, and the dissemination and exploitation of historical materials for active use by teachers and learners globally, as well as promoting historiographical research in English language education.

The Trust has so far supported the following HELE initiatives:

  • HELE India Group project on Textbooks in colonial times: Reviewing the status of historical explorations (2021-24)

  • Webinar series on the relevance of Michael West’s ideas to ELT in Bangladesh, organised by Bangladesh English Language Teachers’ Association (BELTA), May-June 2023:
