The Trust was founded in 1961 by A S Hornby, an English Language Teaching (ELT) specialist best known for producing the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary , published by Oxford University Press. To this day we are funded by royalties from the dictionary and from related products, as well as by income from a professionally-managed investment portfolio.
The Hornby Education Trust celebrated its 60th Anniversary in 2021, here are some photos from our 50th Anniversary in 2011.
The left hand photo is of the late Randolph Quirk, who sadly died in 2017. Randolph is holding a copy of a book with a photo of A.S. Hornby.
